Works
Indigenous Creative Crafts
The arts and crafts below are compilation of our/my work depending on the concept given. These crafts ideas are made by Filipino artists which is a part of our curriculum in engaging ourselves through making arts and crafts and in creativity that Filipinos made.
PABALAT
Pabalat or Pastillas wrap is made of Japanese paper that could be make in various colors. First is you need to determine what style are you up to, then cut it out in 2x10 size fold it in half the fold it in thrice, trace the style you have come up and cut it out. Make sure you leave a 2 inch gap before the art style since the pastillas will be filled in it. After Cutting out, roll it and that now you have the finish product. It might be hard but it is worth it.
OWN DESIGN
In this section, we are encouraged to make an idea creating our own pabalat design through three draft ideas, which we are going to present. I made a three pabalat design that was inspired in Bicol festival because for me, I love how Bicol is just a beautiful province as well as their festivals. So the design I made was about penafrancia, magayon and sunflower festivals. The design chose was the penafrancia which is about our Lady of Penadranci festival, the design is inspired from its crown.
PENAFRANCIA
The design that was approved was my Penafrancia design. It was inspired in Bicol festivals, specifically the Our Lady of Penafrancia festival which is one of the famous and known festivals in Naga City, Bicol. I chose this as one of my designs because foremost, I love the beauty in Bicol and I would love to go there if opportunity was given. This design was inspired from the Lady of Penafrancia's crown because it is compeletely unique and beautiful. To be honest, in making it as a pabalat, it was hard because of the tiny holes from the crown design, but it is worth it. It is a beautiful inspiration for any design.
SUBANG
Subang is made by using two different sets or sizes of yarn, wherein the color should be patterned into a resemblance of a flower as an earrings. It is created by folding yarns into inches strands and is cut in the ends to look like bunch of petals clustered together. Making different crafts is always a matter of creativeness and ideas. Subang is one of the creative art crafts because it is just a simple touches of yarns and then suddenly you could make out from it an earrings. It is a beautiful touch in ears to face as it enhances your look by just a piece of Subang that is just created from yarn. It can also be in different designs that you could make to make it more pleasing or beautiful.
PAPER QUILLING (CHRISTMAS THEME)
Paper quilling is the art of cutting paper into long thin strips, rolling and pinching the pieces into different shapes, and then gluing the shapes together to form decorative art. Paper quilling projects can be used to decorate cards, boxes, gift bags, picture frames, or even be made into 3D stand-alone art pieces.
In this themed paper quilling, I made a design inspired by Christmas since it is christmas season. I created part of a christmas tree with two christmas balls hanging into it, that consists of different colors as a resemble of lighting effect on christmas balls. This could also be make as a christmas card for your love one. And it will be much appreiated since it is a hand-made craft. In making this, it made me excite for the christmas to come because it is the most beautiful and happiest holidays in the whole year where we give gifts and mostly appreciate small things that will always be remembered and matter. Thus, making paper quilling as a greeting card will be a great form of giving and love in holidays or any occations.
SULIHIYA
Weaving
Sulihiya is made from rattan and pieces of wood. It is use to made a sofa, dinning chair, window cover and many furtiniture set that we are now calling as antique designs. Sulihiya or rattan designs are now usually seen in museums or vintage houses, for it is really has a strong texture and proven that it could last for decades. In this project, I do not have efficient needs to use rattan for sulihiya so I made mine from scratch using yarn and the woods are from art canvases I have. It is hard since I used yarn and glue to stick it, comparing to rattan, it will be less hard than yard. But it is really leisurely and it takes hard work to finish this small piece of work.
Batok at Wasay
Before Spanish colonization, and even before the Philippines were colonized, there are traditions and culture that Filipinos established and still currently known by the world for being outrageous and unique. The pagbabatok, especially now, is known to be one of an artwork Filipino tribes established that got viral because of the oldest mambabatok - Whang-Od Oggay. Aside from her being the oldest one to be alive still doing it, pagbabatok is known as a tattoo to express a man or a woman's existence and spirituality before. And what's most fascinating about this is, the of pambabatok is done before, they are still doing it using these traditional equipments and methods and that is one of the important things in preserving the culture and tradition, as well as being known as a Filipino because there are honestly great Filipino artists and works should be known by the world. While the wasay, it is like batok except it is not done on the human body but used as a tool in carving woods such as in furniture and home designs in past decades and up until now. Compared to Greek architecture and design, wasay gives a mark on making a particular thing more seen and valuable. Filipino artworks always give the most effort they get, from tools they are using to the art crafts they do, it is always the hard work and the creativity Filipinos bring and that is what we should be proud of. The things in our country are made of hard work and strong ideas. Technology might now vanish the idea of tradition and culture but creativity and their work will always make a trademark not only in this country but also around the world.
